TTSTV - Gift Box - 12-28-2012

This week at Mark's Finest Papers, a Heinrich Co.'s Tutorial Time on SpeedyTV, the challenge is given by Jane Chambers - to make a gift box.  Again, I haven't made this type of box previously and it turned out to be quite easy.  I was going to use some DP, but decided that the images  better showed up on the kraft CS without DP.  These images are from the newly released set in December, Oh, Beans!

Be sure and join us at TTSTV by click on this TTSTV hot link.  It will take you to SpeedyTV and from there, you simply click on the Tutorial Time tab and the newest challenge and there you are.  If you aren't a member of SpeedyTV - not to worry - as it is easy and free to join.

Box Recipe:

Stamp:  Oh, Beans by Mark's Finest Papers, a Heinrich Co.
Paper:  Kraft CS
Ink:  Memento Rich Cocoa and Copics

MFP's Tutorial Time on SpeedyTV - Party Hat Tutorial

PARTY HAT TUTORIAL

Kathy Bradley – Tutorial Time on SpeedyTV Design Team

Mark’s Finest Papers, a Heinrich Co.

Are you ready for an easy peasy tutorial?!  This little tutorial is only limited by your imagination.  I have used it for children, for a couple of adults, for name tags for a child’s party (reduced size, of course), etc.

          Shall we get started?

Step 1
These are the tools I will use for this tutorial. I will be using my paper cutter, but you can easily use scissors. I have a couple of punches and a die I will be using, but you can trace a shape and cut it out in place of the punches and dies. For this tutorial, I will be using one of the newly released stamp sets from Mark’s Finest Papers, a Heinrich Co., titled Oopsy Daisy.

Step 2
First thing, we will be making our templates.  You will need a triangle shape (any size you like), but for this tutorial, I made my triangle 5 inches tall and 4 inches across the bottom.  I folded my cardstock in half and cut it out to meet these dimensions.  The hat brim is 4-3/4 inches wide and 1-1/2 inches tall.  Remember, these measurements can be adjusted to any size you want to use for your hat card.  [Note:  My hats always open from the top, but you can make yours card so it opens from the bottom, etc.]

Step 3
Using the same measurements I used for the triangle, I cut a piece of designer paper to go on the outside of the card.  [This card is going to a little 3 year old boy – who happens to be crazy about bugs, ladybugs, lightning bugs, butterflies, spiders, etc., so I thought this DP would be perfect for his card.]

Step 4
Here is the hat/card with the DP adhered to the cardstock.

Step 5
I cut out two brims to see which one I liked better.  The one on the left is a bit smaller than the dimensions I gave you in the beginning, but the second brim with the scalloped edges is exactly the measurements shown in the beginning and I ended up liking it better – so that’s the one I will use.

 Step 6
Here is the hat’s brim added.  I used 2-sided sticky strip to put the brim on the hat, I believe it will hold better.  Remember, it’s going to be in the hands of a 3 year old boy!

Step 7
I took a piece of Cherry Slush cardstock (which you can find at Mark’s Finest Papers, a Heinrich Co.’s on-line store) and I measured out the pieces for the inside of the card.  Once you get the hang of this easy peasy tutorial (like after the first time you do it), you can just use color cardstock for the inside of your card instead of using a template as I did, but I wanted you to see the size, steps, etc.- and you can save your template to use time and again.

Step 8
Here is the inside of the card with the pieces adhered.  I cut two pieces for the inside, simply because when the card is folded – the inside measurements are a bit different (smaller).

Again, you can cut one piece for the inside, instead of 2 separate pieces – and just use your scissors and trim the excess from the edges.

Step 9
Now, for the embellishment for the top of the hat, I used a little tiny (blue) flower punch and the smallest die from Spellbinder’s scalloped circles (red).  However, you could use anything you want to decorate the point of the hat.  I’ve used curled ribbons, twine, yarn, different scallops, flowers, etc., etc.

Step 10
Here is the inside decorated with one of the images from the Oopsy Daisy stamp set, as well as the top embellishment added.  I put top embellishments inside/outside and front/back – gives it a more finished look, but again – it’s what will suit you best.

A few times, I’ve also put a hat brim on the inside to match the outside brims – just another idea.

Okay, here is the finished card outside – the back is identical to the front – except it doesn’t have the sentiment.

I hope you enjoyed this easy peasy little tutorial.  As I mentioned, you can make different sizes, make the cards for children or adults, place cards, name tags, etc. etc.

Thanks for joining me and Happy Crafting!
